Pragmatics in Political News

Pragmatics in Political News Introduction Media is one of the most powerful political tool that has been used by various political groupings to pass distorted information to the unsuspecting audience. According to Locher and Graham (2010), media has the role of educating, informing, and entertaining the public. This scholar notes that media has done well on its role of entertaining and educating the public. However, its role to educate the public has been abused by selfish interests of a few aristocrats in the society.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Pragmatics in Political News specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Most of the news agencies across the world are for profit organization that depend on the earnings from advertisements in order to remain operational. This is the main reason as to why these agencies have failed to live up to their expectations as authoritative and independent reporters of what is taking place in the society. It has allowed those with capacity to buy their airtime take control of what they present to the public. News presented by these agencies are always coined in a manner that would convince the public to believe in a given issue irrespective of the truth it holds. This explains why two or three different news agencies would report on a given issue from two different perspectives. This critical discourse analysis would be focused on the Egyptian revolution, and how Aljazeera, Al-Arabiya, and CNN reported on various incidents during this revolution. Critical Discourse Analysis According to Lilleker (2006), reporters have strong influence on the perception that the audience would have during, and after listening to news. Diction plays an important role during the process of editing given news report before it is released to the public. Besides the intention to inform the public about different events in the society, the editors are always focused on influencing public idea through their rep orting. As Stanyer (2001) notes, reporters and their editors have been keen on their linguistic levels such as syntax, lexis, pragmatics, and semantics when presenting a given piece of information. A given incident can be described from different perspectives in order to arouse different reactions from the readers or listeners. Stanyer (2001) says that the function of critical discourse analysis, â€Å"Is to seek to reveal how texts are constructed so that particular (and potentially indoctrinating) perspectives can be expressed delicately and covertly.† In this analysis, it would be interesting to understand the role that was played by different media stations during the Arab Uprising in Egypt. According to Lilleker (2006), the Egyptian revolution was largely influenced by the media. In fact this scholar says that this was a media revolution. People used both the social and mass media to enlighten one another and to motivate everyone to participate in the revolution in diffe rent ways. It would be necessary to understand that when the uprising began, it was seen as a unified fight of the Egyptians against the dictatorial rule of Hosni Mubarak. When Mohammed Morsi took power, another uprising emerged, and he was forced out of power.Advertising Looking for research paper on communications media? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This time round, there were conflicting reactions from the members of the public during the revolution. This could only mean that this society had been subjected to conflicting ideologies from different corridors of power. Media has played a major role in this. At this stage, it would be important to analyze how the three media stations reported on an incident that took place during the revolution, and what they intended to achieve through their reports. The research will analyze the reports made by Aljazeera, Al-Arabiya, and CNN when Morsi was ousted by the militar y. Al-Arabiya It would be necessary to understand the background information about this firm in order to be able to appreciate their motivation in taking a particular approach of reporting. Al Arabiya is a television news broadcaster owned by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. The Saudi government has been considered to be having special interest in this country’s leadership. The country has therefore been keen on monitoring the trend taken by the revolution. This television broadcaster has considered Al Jazeera as its main rival in this industry. In fact Stanyer (2001) notes that it was started to counter the effect of Al Jazeera in this region. Below was its heading and a few lines of the story they aired following the ouster of Morsi by the military. Why Egypt’s revolution continues â€Å"It has been more than two years since Egyptians went to Tahrir Square – and almost a year since they elected their first post-Mubarak president. The revolution, yet, that they call ed for is unfulfilled† (Hellyer, 2013). It would be important to analyze this heading, the lead, and the structure of the short paragraph identified above. The headline Why Egypt’s revolution continues: the heading in this news clearly shows that the revolution in Egypt is still in progress. The choice of words in this heading leaves no doubt as to the position of the reporter and the editor on the Egyptian revolution. The statement emphasizes to the audience the fact that the revolution is still on. As per this heading, it is a common knowledge to the audience that the revolution is still on, therefore, it is only seeking to provide reasons why this revolution is one. This heading shows that the reporter and the editor believes that this revolution is justifiable enough, and this is confirmed in the first few lead sentences in this story.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Pragmatics in Political News specifically for you for only $16. 05 $11/page Learn More The lead The first few sentences in this report shows that the reporter is dissatisfied with what has been achieved by the regime that took power after the ouster of Hosni Mubarak. Two years is a very short time to have a complete change of socio-political and economic environment of a country that had been under dictatorial rule for over half a century. However, this sentence shows that two years was enough for this regime to make necessary changes. Pragmatically speaking, this news is meant to convince the audience that the government of Morsi has been given opportunity to transform this country but it failed. He points out that this is a justifiable reason to make the Egyptians continue with the revolution. The second sentence makes it clear that the Egyptians have not fulfilled the spirit of the revolution they started. Story structure The communication content in this news is so clear in making the audience believe that no gains have been made in restoring democratic rule in this country. The high agitation tone that this news carries is an indication that the society should press on with their revolution because it is justifiable to go on with the fight. A viewer who listens to this news and takes its literal meaning as presented would be critical of the regime that was headed by Morsi. As Stanyer (2001) notes, the problem that makes news agencies very powerful is that people rarely takes time to analyze the information presented to them, especially if it comes from large ‘trusted’ news agencies. This means that the critical approach taken by this news agency will be taken in its literal meaning by the audience. However, a critical look at the content and the manner in which this story was presented shows a lot of bias, and a clear indication that the message carried to the audience must have been the view of the owners of the company which has been very critical of Morsi’s leadership. They had a n opportunity, through this news agency, to urge Egyptian to reject Morsi’s leadership by painting him as a failure who was given a chance to change the society but failed. In order to understand the bias in this newscast, it would be necessary to analyze how a different newsroom presented the same information. Al Jazeera Al Jazeera is a Qatari based television channel with its headquarters in Doha, Qatar (Mey, 2009). Al Jazeera was started in 1996 as an independent voice of the Arabs, after BBC Arabic language was closed. The main focus was to be the mirror that reflects the true image of the Arab World in order to fight the terrorism tag that the West had labeled against the people of Middle East.Advertising Looking for research paper on communications media? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This role has been changing with the changes taking place in the society. It has become a worldwide news agency that reports on various issues other than narrowing its focus on the activities of the Arab World. A section of the society has criticized it, saying that it has been infiltrated by the West despite the loyalty it received from the Arabs. Egypts revolution: Dead or alive? â€Å"As polarized crowds dominate political discourse in Egypt on one end, those who support the military, and on the other, backers of deposed president Mohamed Morsi a middle ground is mourning the loss of a dream.† (Parvaz, 2013). The headline The Al Jazeera headline is very different from the headline given by Al Arabiya over the same incident. Al Jazeera paints a grim picture of the relevance of this war to the people of this society. From a literal view, one would say that the reporter is doubtful on whether the revolution is dead or alive. However, Mey (2009) says that news agencies are r arely doubtful of what they present. At times they may use words that show doubt, but a keen analysis of their message will show their stance in such confusing environment. The syntax, lexis, pragmatics, and semantics in this headline and the introductory part of their news shows that they have a position over the issue of whether the revolution is alive or dead. It would be important to note that the headline says, ‘Dead or alive’ and not ‘Alive or dead.’ The two will portray two different position. The former shows more emphasis on death, while the latter emphasizes on life. To this reporter, the revolution is dead, but he leaves a little room for doubt. The lead The first few lines that have been used in this newscast strongly supports the argument that the revolution is dead. The news starts by describing two polarized groups dominating the political discourse in this country, with one section supporting the military, and the other backing the deposed p resident. It would be necessary to compare how the two newsrooms are talking about one person in the name of Mohamed Morsi. While Al Arabiya calls him Morsi, Al Jazeera refers to him as the disposed president Mohamed Morsi (Parvaz, 2013). Al Jazeera appreciates that he is the president. The next sentence notes that the middle group- which as presented as the genuine heroes of this country in the fight for liberation- are moaning for the lost dream. The dream is lost because President Morsi has been disposed out of his throne. Story structure The story structure clearly indicates that the reporter, and this news agency in general, is in support of the ousted President Mohamed Morsi. It considers the current revolution a failure by the members of the Egyptian society to recognize a true sign of freedom in this country. Cable Network News (CNN) CNN is an American news broadcaster with its headquarters in Atlanta, New York, in the United States. The station has always been regarded to c arry the views of the Americans. In the past, it has been very critical of the dictatorial rule in the Arab World. Egypt and the death of liberalism In Egypt prominent liberals are now supporting a military-backed government overseeing a resurgence of post-Mubarak authoritarianism (Kotb, 2013). The headline The headline made by CNN is very different from that of Al Arabiya, but closely resembles that of Al Jazeera, only that it is more authoritative. While Al Jazeera gave the audience the room to think whether the revolution was dead or alive, CNN makes it clear that liberalism in this country is dead. The news headline gives the impression that the fight for liberation that has persisted for years in this country has gone down the drain. Although protesters are still in the streets, liberalism is dead in Egypt. The lead The lead statement suggests very strongly that those who were seen to fight for liberalism in this country are now supporting the authoritarian rule of the military . It would be necessary to once again understand the syntax used in this introductory part. The report is very careful with his choice of words. He describes the military rule as ‘authoritarian’, something that the society was determined to fight. Story structure The structure of this story leaves no doubt that this television channel is critical of the military leadership that ousted President Morsi. Just as it has been in the past, CNN remains critical of the authoritarian rule by the military, and strongly suggest that liberalism has died in this country because its supporters are now backing the military rule. Conclusion Media has remained a powerful tool that is used to influence the society towards specific issues. Members of the society depend on media to educate, inform, and entertain them. Those who are in power have taken advantage of this to press their personal interest using the media. The different approach in which the revolution in Egypt was reported is a clear indication of this. The three television networks analyzed reported on the same issue from different perspectives, giving out different opinions based on their financiers’ view on the issue. Reference Hellyer, A. The Ok Tedi Mine Case Study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Ok Tedi Mine Case Study - Essay Example Moreover, the mine contributes to costs such as environmental pollution and degradation of land which is risk for the human and animal population. I do think the benefits brought to PNG by the OK Tedi Mine override the costs to the society and environment. This is because the mine is one of the most controversial mining projects where a huge tonnage of wastes are released to the Ok Tedi River which has great effect on the local community living along the river, on the biological structure of the mine and the continuous siltation causes flooding and death of aquatic life (Harding, 1998; p. 308). This is more costly than the benefits. The different stakeholders groups include the owners of land around the Ok Tedi River, the government of PNG, employees in the mine, the indigenous people around the area and the firms contracting the mining projects. The contracting firms contributes to employment opportunities for local people hence raising their living standards, the local community contributes to the labor force in the mines while the land owners give up their land for the benefit of the citizens of PNG. There are some critical problems of the EIA process noted in the DVD. The escalating bank flooding and the transformation from the tropical lands to wet lands of which it contributes to more aquatic vegetation in the area which causes loss of arid land for farming along the Ok Tedi River. This limits the diversification of exports and subsistence farming by the indigenous people of PNG hence low living standards. The dual role of the PNG government in the Ok Tedi Mine as both the owner of the mine and the regulator has some specific positive and negative impact. The positive side is that it reduces the3 exploitation of the local employees and subsequent repatriation of profits by the mining company. The negative side is that it limits the standard of investment through excessive regulation. The best

NUMBERS DROP FOR MARRIED WITH CHILDREN Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

NUMBERS DROP FOR MARRIED WITH CHILDREN - Essay Example To be more precise and clear, a few statistical data can be taken into consideration. Over the last five decades, cohabiting couples in the United States have increased tenfold from 0.44 million to 4.2 million. Divorce rates have increased from 9 to 20 per 1000 married couples for the same period. Births to unmarried women have increased from 11% to 38% from 1970 to 2006. Nationally, more than 1.3 million children are born out of wedlock each year. While cohabitation, divorce and unmarried childbearing have increased, marriage in America has alarmingly declined over the last few decades. Married couples with children are one quarters of the total number of households and half of what was in 1960. Some are of the opinion that only the well educated and the well paid are interested in the institution of marriage. It has been observed that marriage not only declined less among the well educated and well paid, but also that they are less likely to divorce. Though college educated women i nitially prefer to live with a partner, they eventually do get married. However, it is worth noting that the constant increase in the number of people attaining college degree from 16.60 million to 88.75 million from 1950s to 1990s has not helped much in improving the statistics related to marriage. So, education is not the sole reason for the changes that are taking place. The increase in the well educated may not have made a direct impact, but indirectly, it has changed various other aspects of life. It has caused a gradual shift in people's priority from religion to science and technology. In the 1950s and 60s, religion played a vital role in keeping the count of cohabitation and unmarried childbearing low. But with the priority shifting, the emphasis is more on career and wealth maximization. Well educated men and women are less likely to marry those who are less educated. This has largely resulted in growth of income inequality. Before 1970, there was a broad based economic pro sperity which has gradually vanished. (http://www.chicagolandmarriage.org/marriage_statistics.htm) Apart from the economic dimension, some look at the same issue with the racial dimension in mind. Childbearing out of wedlock seemed to be more among the black people than the white. However, statistics in the recent past have shown that there has been a drastic decline in such births among the black teenagers (86% to 35% per 1000) as compared to the whites (24% to 12% per 1000). Hence, class based analysis seems to be a better tool. (http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/educ-attn.html) The question still lingers around as to what made the biggest impact, what is the reason for the way things are today. It is a well accepted fact that the present day situation is nothing but an outcome of the past. The number of marriages in the past may have been on the higher side, but there is no reliable statistical information on how many marriages out of those were actually doing well. People, who have spent their childhood in the shadow of a troubled marriage, most of the times, develop a fear towards getting into a serious relationship. Young people who have lived most of their lives in poverty would be of the opinion that marriage is not a commodity they can afford. Therefore, negative aspects in the past have made a negative impact now in

Therapeutic approaches Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words

Therapeutic approaches - Essay Example From a research conducted by Flower et al (1999), it is evident that, the major reasons towards conducting research in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), is to create an opportunity whereby emotional disorders are minimized, as well as, ensuring client take part in active participation in reduction of social disability risks and relapses. Barker (2003) indicates that, in the assessment procedures, it is important that patients are directed towards identifying their problems, establishing the best way forward towards attaining the best solution for their problems, and finally formulate means of working towards their therapies. The Becks inventory indicated that the client in question was suffering from depression, from an analysis and assessment of the transcript. William (1992) indicated that depression is the causative agents of depression are inclusive of dejected moods, feelings of guilt, loss of happiness, pleasure, appetite as well as, concentration. Depression also, has a high relationship with poor concentrations of clients; low energies have also been characterized in depressed individuals. Becks’ five area assessment, according to William and Garland (2002) gave comprehensive answers on why individuals experienced distorted reasoning abilities, behavior and symptoms in the course of assessment. The thoughts of Grand et al (2007) are in line with those of William and Garland (2002) in relation to the model consisting of the five principles. The model highlights issues of the environment, moods, perceptions, characteristic behaviors as well as, individuals’ physical responses. This model is useful for enabling attain an understanding on how various elements are useful are important, in the assessment and introduction of vital CBT skills. Barker (2003) argues that, this form of assessment strategy is useful for a clear evaluation of patient Marie. This strategy will assist on a great mile, why the patient thinks of her situation, why she is inclined to think that way, and if her perceptions affect her both physically and emotionally. From Marie’s response, as indicated in the respondents’ transcript, it is evident what the patient needs and the interventions required for assistance to the patient. One of the earliest symptoms of distorted emotions is deformed posture. This fact can be justified by M1 and M2. From M18 and M19, the feeling of melancholy, guilt and despair are evident. This is also an explanation of Marie’s distorted behavior as evidenced in M14. Marie is indicated to have responded ‘yes’ to a nurse, which meant that she had issues with something that belonged to her being taken. Fox and Convoy, argue that in the assessment process that it is mandatory that people are enlightened on the need to be open on their problems, as well as set clear goals on what they aim to achieve at the end of the therapy. The patient’s symptoms are evident in M18 and M19, whereby the patient’s response may either indicate the patient’s fright or sadness. The patient may also be indicated to

Business Plan for Entering the Indian Textile Industry

Business Plan for Entering the Indian Textile Industry Textile industry means which produces all types of fabrics, yarns, combs, boffins etc.. it also includes all ready made garments, blankets (woollen / acrylic). India is leading country of cotton fabrics and wollen carpets and cotton durries. To establish a textile industry a huge amount is required and it is around 1 2.5 crores of rupees. After the issue of capital is settled second comes the problem of land and machines for the manufacturing concern. When we select a location for our business we need to have certain things in our mind like the location should be best suited to the business and environment. Then we have to register that location so that we will not be facing any problem regarding its ownership and authorization. After we have settled all the above issues we have to decide the channels from where would we import raw materials and through which we would distribute finished goods. We are importing raw materials for the woolen, acrylic blankets , knitted garments and socks from USA, CANADA, ITALY, GERMANY and The raw cotton from south Africa. As presently they are the largest producers in there respective field. The govt of India is also helping us to establish our business by giving us incentives by way of establishing special economic zones where we can establish our own unit. Under special economic zone the rate of land is very concessional on monthly basis. The machines we are importing are under NIL rate of duty with the conditions that manufactured products will be exported to outside india to gain the foreign currency. Our Most of the inferior units are situated at PANIPAT (HARIYANA), LUDHIANA ( PUNJAB), Surat (GUJRAT) which are manufacturing sarees, socks, suiting and shirting fabrics. This is a very good industry and profit earning sector because everyone needs clothes to cover his body. So in my opinion the textile industry is the best sector which provides jobs to unskilled laborers and profits to the owner of the unit. To set up a business we have to apply to the commerce ministry for license, the application will be made on the payment of fees prescribed by the government of India. There are also good amount of demands, which we expect to convert into orders. Every business passes through various cycles, good and difficult but It is only in the challenging environment that one learns the best lessons of life. Challenging time in past few years presented an opportunity to look into the business very closely, remove inefficiencies, rationalize expenditure (control costs) and look at alternate products markets. The environment has become quite encouraging for our textile companies. The following facts will prove that. In a country like India, the present situation has definitely created an advantage over Competing Countries. As there is an Appreciation in Chinese currency that resulted in increase in their labour cost.due to this they lose the cost advantage and competitiveness. Also the buyers of clothes are looking at viable alternate to China as they do not want any further risk. There are many uncertain economic conditions in the neighboring countries that upset customers confidence for timely delivery of their orders. Thus many countries shifted their orders to India and that is really a healthy sign for our business. This scenario has brought promising prospects for Our Textile Industry. Slowdown in USA and Europe has led to increase in demand for basic products as against products in the luxury segments. Discount stores like Wal-Mart have witnessed higher volumes. Our company has been traditionally catering to the medium and lower segment of the market, thus witnessing higher volumes. During March to August 2010, ready made garments worth $4.87 billion were exported from our textile industry, In rupee terms, the figures work out to Rs207.6 billion market of India as far as textile is concerned . Phosphorescent Dyes appear to glow in the dark. Micro-Encapsulation is the application of microscopic capsules to either a yarn or the surface of a fabric. Abrasion is the scraping or wearing away of something. Interactive Textiles are touch and pressure-sensitive fabrics incorporating conductive fibres. Geotextiles are bonded or woven man-made and natural fabrics that can be made from polypropelene fibres. . . Lower level employees those are new to this industry get less salary as they do not have the proper degree but as soon as they get their dgree their salary would automatically raise. The main assumption that come from these plan is that our company not only recruit a person who has a degree for it but also we provide a good and free training to poor poeple so any one having dadicaion to his work and life can join in our company. We also have a suggestion box, and organize monthly meetings to follow up tasks. ASSESSMENT OF RISK By doing the assessment of risk we are in a position to identify hazards that could cause damage to our textile industry. our assessment of risk makes us enable to know the hurdles and adapt measures accordingly to avoid or control risks Risk assessment would be recorded by the person who are assigned for it. Risk assessment of upcoming events are distributed among different person of different groups and it would be done when we gather all the information from the contractor, other companies It will also be a part of our risk assessment to built a personal contact with our customers so that we would be updated with teir new demands and thus can satisfy them. What are the risks? Indian Textile Industry is highly Fragmented Industry. Industry is highly dependent on Cotton. Lower Productivity in various segments. There is Declining in Mill Segment. Lack of Technological Development that affect the productivity and other activities in whole value chain. Infrastructural Bottlenecks and Efficiency such as, Transaction Time at Ports and transportation Time. Unfavorable labor Laws. Lack of Trade Membership, which restrict to tap other potential market. Lacking to generate Economies of Scale. Competition from other developing countries, especially China. Continuous Quality Improvement is need of the hour as there are different demand patterns all over the world. Elimination of Quota system will lead to fluctuations in Export Demand. Threat for Traditional Market for Powerloom and Handloom Products and forcing them for product diversification. eographical Disadvantages. International labor and Environmental Laws. To balance the demand and supply. To make balance between price and quality. Higher Indirect Taxes, Power and Interest Rates Another major risks Threat of new entrants Threat of substitutes Competitive rivalry The second reason of risk is fluctuation in the share market. The one of the major risk is demand in the market, if the demand of people will not fulfilled by our company then the people will move to the next textile company; this will again cause loss to the owner. FINANCIAL PLAN Financial planning is a process of setting objectives, assessing assets and resources, estimating future financial needs, and making plans to achieve monetary goals. Many elements may be involved in financial planning, including investing, asset allocation, and risk management. Tax, retirement, and estate planning are typically included as well. The following are the financial plan of Aggarwal textiles. They are: We invested nearly 1 crore rupees in the establishment of our project. We also have shares in the share market which will give financial strength in the market. We also have future plan to increase our company to 5%-6% per year. We also give discounts and other attraction to our customers in the off season to increase our income. We also give guarantee on our products so that we would be able to build a good impression on their mind. We have provided replacement facility too. The marketing research and tailored marketing strategy described in this business plan will result in  healthy profits, increasing  every year. It is estimated that by year 2015, revenues will reflect an 10% market share of the local market. Monthly break-even is very achievable. Total production at the time of this writing was approximately 70 units, which will increase to 100 by the end of the year 2015. Because it is the policy of the company to provide the fabric for the soft window treatment products, the company has a very low cost of goods sold account and therefore a high gross margin. Furthermore, the custom nature of the business means that there is  minimal inventory cost and accounts payable. Finally, the company does not posess any debt or long term capital assets that would affect the cash flow. With the ability to generate so much cash flow, it is assumed that the company will seek to use this asset to expand its markets and production capacity in the near future For our financial plan we consulted with our parents, friends and seeked many sources from where we could get the informations.after all we decided to invest in which we contributed 50% each in which we got helped by our parents and our relatives.our contribution included our savings of the past which we saved for this day and it was of great help.

Henrik Isbens A Dolls House Essay examples -- A Dolls House Essays

Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, considers a very delicate situation experienced by a Scandinavian family in 1879. Nora Helmer, the main character and adored wife of Torvald faces a life-altering dilemma. She has to decide whether to remain with her obsessive husband in his sheltered home, playing the part of a doll, or take the initiative to leave and seek out her own individuality. There are three minor characters that have a significant impact on the final decision that Nora attains. Each one, representing some particular social aspect, is essential to the development of Nora’s character. Krogstad, Dr. Rank and Mrs. Linde have all had a long-standing relationship with the Helmer family, but neither character can provide Nora with a completely reassuring path to follow. She must discover this for herself, as they can only help to point her in another direction other than the one that Torvald has. Nils Krogstad is in fear of losing his job at the bank. He will stop at nothing in order to retain his position, as he has struggled relentlessly to get to where he is now. Krogstad was guilty of committing the same crime as that of Nora and although their motives were different, the law still regards their actions as fraudulent. In all of his ruthlessness and selfishness, Krogstad represents the desperation that Nora experience’s throughout the play as she tries to figure a way out of her desperate situation. She had gone to him in her time of need and now he has approached her in his time of despair. However, she is unable to assist him because it would mean that she would have to involve Torvald and that is the last thing she wants to happen. Thus, Krogstad retaliates by explaining to her that if he goes down, she will go with him. “But I tell you this: if I’m pitched out a second time, you are going to keep me company';(Ibsen 29). He shows no sympathy, as he doe s not hesitate to destroy the reputations of both Nora and Helmer for his own benefit and to further his own standing in society. The character of Krogstad demonstrates that although one can overcome their fault and eventually move on with life, that person will ultimately revert to other similar acts of ruthlessness later in life. Dr. Rank is also a long-time acquaintance of the Helmer’s and makes frequent visits to their household. ... ...many hardships however, she provides Nora with assurance, a sense of hope that women can make a living on their own, without a husband at their side.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the end, all three minor characters have undergone a radical change, having arrived at some other position in life. Krogstad and Mrs. Linde have become a couple, and Dr. Rank is soon to pass away. This is significant, as Nora has chosen to abandon her family to pursue her own independence and individuality. She will no longer play the part of a doll and depend on Torvald to support her and resolve all of her problems and thus, takes a giant step forward towards the development of women as their own individuals. Ibsen’s A Doll’s House explores the role of women in the late 1800’s and stresses the importance of their realization of this believed inferiority. Living in our present day society sometimes causes us to underestimate the transition that women have undergone throughout these last hundred years. However, Nora’s progression at the end of the play arouses an awareness to an awakening society recognizing the changing view of the stat us of women at that time.

4 Step Process to Contract Law Essay

Question a) Step One The principle of law is that for a valid contract to be formed there must be an agreement reached by both parties. Step Two There are three main elements for the formation of a legally binding contract, intention, agreement and consideration. The requirement that requires discussion here is the existence of an agreement by the parties to enter into a legally binding contract. An agreement means a consensus on at least those essential terms needed for a workable transaction. The process of reaching an agreement is generally analysed as involving an offer and acceptance. Where the offer is a clear indication of the terms upon which a person is prepared to be bound, and an acceptance is assenting to, agreeing, or receiving the terms offered. See more: Basic Economic problem of Scarcity Essay The requirements of an ‘offer’ must be promissory, such as in Placer Development Ltd v Cth (1969) 121 CLR 353 where what the government had said was not a legally enforceable promise, but had appeared to be one. It must be sufficiently complete, and intended to result in a contract if accepted. The requirements of an ‘acceptance’ to exist must be in the same terms of the offer. It cannot still be subject to a condition, such as where it was clear that Cameron had not intended to be bound until a formal contract was prepared and signed, Masters v Cameron (1954) 91 CLR 353. An acceptance must be made while the offer is still in existence. It must be made by a person whom the offer was addressed. If the offer is intended to be made to any person that learns of it then any such person can accept the offer on the stated terms. Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Co (1893) 1 QB 256, where Carlill had read an advertisement offering a reward to anyone who caught influenza after buying the company’s smoke ball. Carlill bought the ball and caught influenza, since the offer was made to ‘the world at large’ it is capable to be accepted by anyone who learns of it, including Carlill. An acceptance must be made in acceptable form. In the case of emails, it is considered to have been received when it reaches an information system designated by the person to whom the email is addressed via s 13 electronic Transactions (Victoria) Act 2000 and equivalent legislation in other stated and territories. For the process of offer and acceptance to result in agreement, the terms of the offer must be accepted without suggesting changes. For example, in Olley v Marlborough Court Ltd (1949) 1 KB 532 Olley had her furs stolen in the hotel, and there was a notice in the room notifying that the hotel was not held accountable for stolen goods. This notice was not part of the agreement as it was not in the initial contract and therefore the hotel was made liable. Step Three The review of whether an agreement has been reached between both parties involves determining the requirements of an offer and acceptance have been met. Firstly, for an offer to exist, it must be intended to result in a contract is accepted. The advertisement made by Games Travel Ltd is not viewed as an offer by the courts because advertisements are not intended to signal a readiness to be bound, but rather an invitation asking customers to make an offer to buy. Secondly, for the requirements of an acceptance to exist, it must be in the same terms of the offer. If the advertisement were to be seen as an offer, the terms agreed on would be $1000 for the tickets and tickets to the finals in swimming, archery and gymnastics. Jon only authorized the payment of $1000 as the terms on the offer expressed. As the terms had changed after he had authorized payments, there were no tickets to the gymnastics, which made the offer invalid. Lastly, for the process of offer and acceptance to result in agreement, the terms of offer must be accepted without suggesting changes. The change from $1000 to $2000 breached this requirement. An attempt to accept an offer on different terms should have been constructed as a rejection of the original offer and the making of a counter-offer. Step Four Due to not meeting the requirements of an ‘offer’ through not being intended to result in a contract if accepted, and not meeting the requirements of an ‘acceptance’ by not being in the same terms of the offer, there is no legal binding agreement between both parties and Jon is not obliged to pay $2000 for the plane tickets as there is no authorization for $2000, rather $1000. Question b) Step One The area of law relevant to this question is the review of a contents of a contract enforced between two parties. Step Two There are particulars to a contract which structure its existence. This includes the importance of terms within the contract, the freedom of contract, statements that do not become part of contract, and terms of contract. Within a contract consideration must be made to the creation of the contract. The terms of the contract define the obligations of the parties. It is by analysing the terms that you can find out what has to be done to discharge those obligations. For example in Cehave NV v Bremer Handelsgesellschaft mbH [1976] QB 44; [1975] 3 All ER 739, the buyer Cehave did not want to accept the delivered goods because they were not in ‘good condition’ although they were in satisfactory condition to perform their purpose which was to be used as animal feed. Freedom of contract is the freedom of individuals to bargain among themselves the terms of their own contracts, without external interference. People can negotiate effectively in their own interest and both parties negotiate from a position of equal strength. Limits included on freedom of contract are illegal undertakings not enforceable, such as anything more than minimal regulations and taxes may be seen as infringements. Policy considerations may limit freedom of contract. There are certain statements that do not become part of the contract but are said in negotiations. This includes puffs, opinions and representations. Puffs are statements of exaggerated praise to excite buyers and encourage sales and are without any real or measurable substance. Opinions are statements of personal views or beliefs and should not be relied on as it may be incorrect. If a person misrepresents their true opinion, their statement is treated as a representation. Representations are statements often made to encourage the other party to enter the agreement, without intending that they be contractual promises. For example Oscar Chess Ltd v Williams [1957] 1 All ER 325, the car dealer sued Williams for breach of contract due to the car age document being false. The courts decided the document was a mere representation rather than a contractually binding promise. The terms of a contract describe the entire contents of a legally enforceable agreement. Terms are ‘express’ when they have actually been declared or definitely stated. There are disagreements over whether particular terms have been included in the contract or not. For example Causer v Browne [1952] VLR 1 the statement on the docket was not seen as contractual terms as it was only an identifying docket. A term may also be ‘implied’ into a contract when that term was intended to be part of the contract without being expressly stated or referred to. It can only be implied if it is obvious that the parties had intended to include the term as part of their agreement. Implied terms must be reasonable and fair, be capable of clear, unambiguous expression and it must not contradict any express terms. In Codelfa Construction v State Rail Authority of NSW (1982) 149 CLR 337 Codelfa tried to claim extra payment for the extra costs incurred due to stopping and starting work overnight. The courts rejected this as there was no such term implied that would see unforeseeable stoppage to work and compensation paid out. A breach of contract that causes loss gives rise to a claim for damages. If sufficiently serious, a breach may justify a claim to damages plus a refusal to accept performance. To evaluate the seriousness of a breach various terms are distinguished and some terms are described as ‘conditions’ and the others ‘warranties’. Conditions are terms of fundamental importance to the agreement, whereas warranties are terms of lesser importance than conditions. In a breach of condition an injured party can terminate contract and/or sue for the damages. Whilst in a breach of warranty the injured party can sue for damages. In Associated Newspapers Ltd v Banks (1951) 83 CLR 322 Bancks, the cartoonist had the right to terminate his contract as the promise to publish Blancks drawing’s on the front page of the comic section was a condition term. Step Three Identifying the content of the contract between Jon and Games Travel Pty Ltd shows that there are express terms that exist within the contract. For example, the two tickets for the price of one, and the tickets to the finals in the swimming, archery and gymnastics. These terms are contractual terms and must be carried out as specified by the agreement. The terms sought throughout the contract are categorised as warranties, as they are not terms of fundamental importance. Such terms are the swimming tickets, where Jon had received men’s event and not the women’s. Also, the ticket price was doubled when charged, the initial contract was $1000 which is a warranty term. Terms that are conditional are the actual flight to the Commonwealth Games in India. Breaches of Warranty terms such as the swimming ticket and $2000 charge would be a breach of contract. In such a case, the remedy available for breaching warranties are to claim for damages only. This would include $1000 which Jon was overcharged. Step Four In conclusion, through analysis of the contents of the contract a breach of warranty has arisen. The remedy of such can include a sue for damages incurred.

20 Big Fat Lies College Professors Tell Us

20 Big Fat Lies College Professors Tell Us Grab a tub of popcorn, sit back and relax because you’re about to go through the top 20 big fat lies that college professors tell their students in colleges from sea to shining sea. You’ll be hard pressed to think of any others. This list pretty much covers every base. Enjoy! 1. â€Å"You can’t wait until the night before the exam to study and hope to pass it.† Not true. There are many different little details and variables to consider here. It’s actually quite possible to procrastinate and still get good grades. 2. â€Å"I’ll have the tests/exams/homework graded and back to you by the end of the week.† Yeah right. Some professors are pretty good about this, while others aren’t because they’re so bogged down with classes. They’ve got hundreds of tests to grade and papers to inscribe in their ledger. Don’t count on it. 3. â€Å"What you’re learning in this class will prepare you for the real world.† Absolutely not true. That’s like saying that working out will prepare a gladiator for battle. Knowledge is helpful, but there’s a big difference between the classroom and the world off campus. 4. â€Å"If you fail 101, you should probably choose a different major.† Huh? If you have your heart set on a major but bomb 101 that just means you need to try harder. For example, just because a music student struggles with reading and writing music theory doesn’t mean they’re not gifted musicians. 5. â€Å"I take each one of your papers and read through them thoroughly.† Really? That is almost never true. There simply isn’t enough time. 6. â€Å"I can spot an A-student from a mile off.† Maybe they can and maybe they can’t. They’re likely just trying to come off as superior or trying to intimidate students to try and scare off the rabble. A-students are made, not born. 7. â€Å"I do give extensions and I consider exceptions to conventional rules.† If they need to announce this then there’s probably some strings attached. Extensions typically come with a certain type of price tag. 8. â€Å"This is a fabulous field to focus on, with plentiful employment opportunities.† With only a tiny few exceptions, a college degree in any major doesn’t mean a job at all. Period. You’re heading into the 21st century online globalized workforce. 9. â€Å"I’m not paid enough to be biased.† Everyone is biased, especially a professor. 10. â€Å"I care deeply about your success in this major.† How is it possible for a professor to care about hundreds of incoming and outgoing students year over year? Maybe if you establish a strong relationship with them, otherwise this is a stretch. 11. â€Å"This is by far the very best class I’ve ever taught.† How clichà ©. Unless you’re in a truly legendary class for some reason then what’s the point of that statement? 12. â€Å"Oh yes, I always knew I was going to become a college professor.† Could be true, but in most cases it’s not. Remember the old saying, â€Å"Those that can’t do, teach.† 13. â€Å"This is the first time I’ve had to do this but†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Teachers say this to their classes from 1st grade to graduate year Senior Seminar. 14. â€Å"Your final GPA will make a huge impact on the rest of your life.† Not true. The GPA is just a number and has no direct bearing on what you are or are not capable of accomplishing in life. 15. â€Å"I expect the best out of my students.† No, they probably don’t. The longer they’ve been teachers the less true this statement is likely to be. 16. â€Å"The tests aren’t what’s most important here.† At the end of the day that’s simply not true. Take away the need to pass tests and exams, and what’s left? 17. â€Å"I don’t accept excuses.† Maybe not excuses, but there are always extenuating circumstances that all professors must take into account. 18. â€Å"Oh sure, you can stop by my office anytime you need and my door’s always open.† This is so not true, especially if they teach a common elective course or core required course within a popular major. When they’re door is open there’s probably a line and someone already inside. 19. â€Å"If you show up to each lecture, you’ll pass my class.† This isn’t true. There’s a fair amount to be said with exposure, listening intently and taking notes but just showing up doesn’t guarantee anything. 20. â€Å"Just be honest, don’t write what you know I want to hear.† Don’t ever fall for this one. Aim to strike a balance between stretching your limits and the limits of the class/instructions, and being honest. What other lies have you heard from your professors? Share in comments!

Blaise Pascal

Blaise Pascal argues that there is a mathematical possibility that God exists. His argument is know as Pascals Wager, and he states that believing in God is sensible and rational even though there is no evidence or objective certainty to believe it. Simply put, he argues that you have more to gain from believing in God than you have to lose. According to Pascal there are essential benefits in believing in his existence. Yet the existence of God has been a question of controversy ever since people developed the capability of thought. Elliott Sober gives rise to several strong objections against Pascals argument, which should also be taken into consideration when regarding an argument for the existence of a God. This paper will argue for Pascals reason why you should believe that God exists. Pascal propositions for theism is what Sober calls a prudential reason. That is it is in your own self-interest that you believe in God, though there is no evidence to support that there is a God, because of the bad things that can happen to you if you do not believe. Pascal asks you only consider that there is the slightest possibility that God exists, so he can give you prudential reason for theism. People have to essential make a gamble when it comes to the belief in God. You can think of it along these lines. Even thought the probability that there is a God can be small but ends up being true, think of all the good things that you can gain from it; love, happiness, eternal life in heaven and so on. The amount of things that you can gain is a whole deal greater than the cost to you, such as going to church and praying regularly. If you do not believe in God, you may not have to go to c! hurch but you will not get to enjoy the priceless and infinite rewards that God offers. Sober makes two objections to Pascals Wager. First Sober brings forth the decision theory and states that belief is n

Los Angeles in the 30's & 40's versus today Essay

Los Angeles in the 30's & 40's versus today - Essay Example Although LAX is currently a world renowned airport, it wasn’t always the center of attention. Prior to its inception, the primary airports for Los Angeles were Burbank and Grand Central Airport in Glendale. It wasn’t until 1946 that they started serving LAX, because it was just too far out of the way. At that time, it was located east of Sepulveda Boulevard, which ended up being rerouted to the west to loop around the new runways that were created in 1950. Nowadays, LAX is considered one of the busiest airports in the world, with nearly 60 million passengers using the airport each year. They also have a dual function as a civil-military base, providing the U. S. Coast Guard an area to launch, operate and repair their HH-65 Dolphin helicopters. (Delta Mike Airfield, 2008). Although the birth of LAX is a notable part of history in L.A., it was only the beginning of many not-so-good firsts for the city. In 1934, Upton Sinclair decided to run for the governor’s seat of California. He was a famous writer and activist, but he was also a socialist who happened to be California’s first celebrity politician. It gave birth to smear politics on a grand scale. Sinclair easily gained the Democratic primary for governor, after which the L. A. Times criticized his â€Å"maggot-like horde† of supporters (Huffington Post, 2008), while others warned that if elected, the state would become communist. This realization ignited an all-out political revolution. With help from Hollywood and the papers, Sinclair’s opposition practically invented the modern media campaign. They made unparalleled use of mail, radio, film, fund raising and opinion polls to create the most astounding smear campaign ever seen. The best was the new ability to manipulate film, using fake newsreels with Hollywood actors to destroy Sinclair’s candidacy. The L.A. Times had attacked Sinclair unmercifully for weeks, which ultimately destroyed his chances.
